New book “Ofifo, A Memoir of an Unexceptional Life,” by our member Michael East available on Amazon

About the author

May you live in interesting times, says the famous curse. Michael never asked for any of those. They just happened. Having been born in the Soviet Union at the junction of two crucial eras, he moved to the United States in his twenties and never looked back. Over the course of his life, Michael had been a teacher, a translator, a business owner, a “soccer mom,” and an habitual scribbler. Having discovered the joys of travel later in life, he embraced the vagabond lifestyle wholeheartedly, becoming, in his own words, a full-time “international bum”. He is still very much at it, staying away from everyone’s favorite fancy locations and enjoying the small things. His credo is: Want not. Waste not. Make do.

About the book

The nonfictional storyline takes the reader from the 1970s in the Soviet Union through America the beautiful of the nineteen nineties and two thousands, to the author’s full-time, multi-year shenanigans in modern-day Greece, and Cyprus. Part personal story, part travelogue, part essay on language, bilingualism, art, and life philosophy, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in modern history, travel, foreign language learning, and coping with the daily vicissitudes of life.
