The Charles M. Stern Autonomous Grant: Supporting Career Growth for NYCT Members

•

In 2024, the New York Circle of Translators (NYCT) proudly launched the Charles M. Stern Autonomous Grant, a long-awaited initiative designed to support the professional development of our members. This fund, made possible by a generous bequest from Charles M. Stern, provides financial assistance to translators and interpreters looking to enhance their skills or acquire career-advancing tools.

Who Was Charles M. Stern?

Charles M. Stern was a founding member of NYCT, a mathematician turned translator, and a true advocate for the profession. Known for his intellect and wit, Charles loved languages and was always eager to help his fellow translators. He passed away in 1993, but through his bequest, his legacy continues to benefit the Circle’s members. Charles left behind a significant fund with the express purpose of advancing the careers of translators and interpreters through education, training, and professional development.

What is the Stern Fund?

The Charles M. Stern Autonomous Grant provides NYCT members with discretionary grants to support professional development. Whether members pursue certifications, attend workshops, or purchase industry-specific tools, the fund helps cover these costs. Twice a year, the NYCT Board votes on applications and awards funds to qualifying members.

Who Can Apply?

To apply for the Stern Fund, members must be in good standing with the Circle and have been members for at least one year before their application. Eligible activities include but are not limited to continuing education, certifications, professional memberships, and software purchases.

Award recipients are required to share their experiences with the wider NYCT community, contributing a short article about how the grant helped their professional growth. These articles are featured in The Gotham and on NYCT’s social media.

Spring 2024 Award Recipients

This year, several members of NYCT were awarded Stern Fund grants. They used the funds to pursue specialized training and invest in attending industry conferences. We are excited to highlight their achievements in future issues of The Gotham and look forward to seeing how this support will help them achieve new milestones in their careers.

How to Apply

The NYCT Board will open the next round of applications in October 2024. Members will be notified via email and provided with detailed application instructions. We encourage all members to consider applying, as the fund is a valuable resource for anyone looking to expand their skills and stay at the forefront of the industry.

The Charles M. Stern Autonomous Grant is a unique benefit for NYCT members, providing a pathway for continued learning and professional advancement. We owe a debt of gratitude to Charles M. Stern for his foresight and generosity, which continue to have a lasting impact on our community.
